Concert Appreciation

Concert Appreciation Assignment

Though most of the students involved in our ensembles will not go on to a career in music, we hope that your time in the NVHS music department will give you the tools you need to be an educated patron of music.  No matter what your future occupation may be, a lifelong appreciation of the arts should be enjoyed.

Goals:
1.       Attend a high school, collegiate or professional concert performance (classical, jazz, opera, musical theater).   You are expected to stay for the entire performance.
2.       Relate elements of the performance to your experiences in band/choir/orchestra class.
3.       Learn about the music performed at the concert by listening to announcements and program notes.
4.       Use appropriate vocabulary and music terminology.

Assignment:

Using the writing prompts listed below, write a paper about your concert experience. Your paper should be a minimum of 2 pages long. Papers should be typed in Times New Roman, 12-point font, and double-spaced with 1-inch margins Do not use headings or extra spaces between paragraphs. This cover sheet will serve as your title page. Your paper should be in essay form. Do not use numbering, roman numerals, bullets, etc.
This assignment must be submitted within ONE week of the concert you attend. Please attach a program or ticket stub as proof of attendance. Please attach this cover sheet. No e-mails or late papers will be accepted. No papers will be accepted for events other than those described in goal #1.

Content:
Your paper must include the following.
1.        Write a brief introduction describing the event you attended.
2.       Using musical vocabulary, discuss how the pieces you heard conveyed emotion. Describe the emotions that were communicated by the music. How was this accomplished? Be sure to reference elements of music (melody, rhythm, tone color, etc.) and performance considerations (balance, phrasing, dynamics, articulation, etc.)
3.       How can you relate this performance to a concept we have covered in class this year?
4. Describe, using the language we use in class, your favorite part of the concert.  Again, use proper terminology and discuss the aesthetic musical qualities of the experience (Aesthetics:  a conception of what is artistically valid or beautiful).
